What the circle cuts off

Discord, Facebook, and plenty of other apps take your profile picture as a square and show it in a circle, so the corners never appear. A crop that looks right as a square can lose an ear, a shoulder, or the top of your head once it is round.

The ring in the editor marks what the circle keeps. Once you crop, the finished picture is shown in a round frame, large and small, before you save it.

  1. Add your photo. It opens as a square in the middle of the photo.

  2. Line up the circle. Drag and resize the box until your face sits inside the ring.

  3. Save and upload. It saves as a square JPG, ready for your profile.

Size and file limits

Each platform sets its own floor and ceiling. A crop from a phone photo is usually thousands of pixels wide, which clears every minimum below but can be over GitHub's 1 MB or X's 2 MB limit.

The finished panel shows the file size. If it is over, set the picture to 500 × 500, which GitHub suggests and which comes out well under 1 MB.

For exact pixels, finish in the image resizer after you crop.

Profile picture sizes, from each platform

Taken from each platform's own help page in November 2026. They change now and then, so each row links to its source.
