How to Make a QR Code for a PDF
A QR code cannot hold a PDF, only a link to where it lives. Two honest ways to do it, what the reader sees, how to swap the file without reprinting, and how small it needs to be for a phone.

The brochure is a PDF on your laptop, and the code on the flyer has to open it on a stranger's phone. Between those two things, the file needs to live somewhere a phone can reach.
A QR code cannot hold a PDF. It holds a link, and the link opens the file. So the job is really two jobs: putting the PDF online, then making a code for where it lives.
Two ways to do it
- Upload it to a PDF QR code generator. One step. The file is stored for you, and the code opens a page with the document on it.
- Put it on Google Drive and make a code for the link. Free, and fine for a one-off. Set the file's sharing to “Anyone with the link”, copy the link, and turn that into a code with any generator.
The Drive route has one weakness worth knowing before you print. The code works only while that file stays shared, in that account. Moving it, tidying the folder or changing who can see it breaks every printed copy.
Canva and other design tools make codes from links too, so the PDF still has to live somewhere first. They are the right place to design the flyer, not to host the file.
What the reader sees
With our PDF QR code generator, the code opens a short page rather than dropping the reader straight into a file viewer.
- A title and a line of description, so the reader knows they have the right document.
- A preview of the first page, made from the file you upload.
- Two buttons: one to view or download the PDF, one to share it. You can rename both, so “Open the price list” is fine.
Files can be up to 20 MB. That limit is generous on purpose, because a scanned brochure is routinely over a few megabytes.
Swapping the PDF without reprinting
Prices change, a phone number moves, the spring brochure becomes the summer one. If the code points at a page you control, none of that needs new print.
With ours, you open the code, upload the new file and save. The printed code keeps working, it now opens the new document, and the old file is deleted when you save, so last season's prices do not linger.
On Drive, the equivalent is “Manage versions”, which replaces an uploaded file while keeping its link. Uploading a new file the ordinary way gives it a new link, and the printed code keeps opening the old one.
Keep it small enough for a phone
Twenty megabytes is the most you can upload, not a target. Someone scanning on a train is on mobile data, and a heavy file is a long wait for a page that may never finish loading.
A few megabytes is comfortable. Scanned pages are what make a PDF heavy, and the same fix that gets a file under an email limit works here.
The how, with the numbers we measured: shrinking a PDF that is too big to email.
A menu is a special case
Restaurant menus have their own problems: diners on a phone at a table, prices that change weekly, and a PDF that is often the wrong format entirely. They are covered in a restaurant menu QR code done properly.
Before you print
- Open it on mobile data. Office Wi-Fi hides a slow file.
- Read the first page on a phone. A landscape A3 poster saved as a PDF is unreadable at phone width. If that is your file, a one-page summary may serve the reader better.
- Say what the scan opens. “Scan for the price list” earns more scans than a bare code.
- Test the printed proof, not the screen. A code that scans from a monitor can still fail on glossy card in a dim room.
Questions people ask
Can a QR code link to a PDF?
Yes. The code holds a link to wherever the PDF is stored, and scanning it opens the file. The PDF itself is never inside the code.
How do I make a QR code for a PDF in Google Drive?
Upload the PDF, set its sharing to “Anyone with the link”, copy the link and paste it into a QR code generator. Keep the file where it is, or the code stops working.
Can you link a QR code to a PDF in Canva?
Canva makes codes from links, so host the PDF first, on Drive or with a PDF QR code generator, then paste that link into Canva.
Can I update the PDF after printing the code?
Yes, if the code opens a page or link you control. With ours you upload the new file in an edit and save, and the printed code opens the new version.
How big can the PDF be?
Ours takes files up to 20 MB. For phones, a few megabytes loads far better, so compress scanned pages first.
Put the file somewhere you control, keep it light, and test it on a phone on mobile data. The code is the easy part.
